The High Sparrow hobbled along the top step, looking out over the stairs that led up to the Great Sept of Baelor, still nursing his injuries from the unsuccessful attempt to apprehend Cersei Lannister. The Faith lost many loyal men. But the Seven saw fit to see me through the ordeal. The Father is not yet done with me. He looked down at the street below, where Sparrows ladled out bowls of brown and hard cheese to a never-ending line of the impoverished of Flea Bottom.
Taking time to lick their wounds after the blunder at the Red Keep, The High Sparrow had plundered more unexplored corners of the Great Sept and sold off the gaudy relics found within. Gold and jewels, hoarded by previous High Septons, were sold in the markets, and the profits funded The High Sparrow’s dinner program for several more weeks. The Mother Above would be satisfied with that.
His body ached all over. The drab grey tunic he wore covered his bruises, but every movement tinged with pain. But there was work to be done. The Seven had blessed The High Sparrow with another day, and he had to do their good work. Aches could not stop him. He could not allow that.
The High Sparrow nodded to the Sparrow in charge of the food line and made his way, gingerly to avoid further injury, and hobbled back into the Sept. He followed the corridor towards the area of the compound where the Septas tended to the sick and wounded. I need to see a man about a House
The man was Paxtan Carring. He had arrived over a week ago, victim of what appeared to be a brutal spear attack. There were times when the Septas worried he might not ever walk again, but he seemed to be on the mend. He was now very active, and very anxious. He seemed to have much to say. Someone should listen…
The High Sparrow accepted the offered forearm of a passing Sparrow, letting him aid the High Sparrow down the stairs. He raised his hand to draw the attention of a passing Septa. ”Would you be so kind, show me to Ser Paxtan. I wish to meet with our most popular patient.”
